The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds Installs Wind Turbine

RSPB install a Proven Energy 15kW wind turbine

(PRWeb UK) April 30, 2009

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), which recently came out to support wind power development in correctly sited locations, has installed a small scale wind turbine at its Rainham Marshes visitor centre in Purfleet, Essex.

RSPB Rainham Marshes Manager, Nick Bruce-White said “Powering Rainham Marshes with renewable energy not only shows our commitment to tackling climate change, it demonstrates the important role renewables can play in delivering our future energy needs. The RSPB is often most visual when objecting to wind turbine proposals. However, as demonstrated by a recent IEEP study commissioned by the RSPB, wind power does have a valuable role to play in contributing towards the UK’s renewable energy needs, and can do so without harming wildlife. The wind turbine at Rainham Marshes is an excellent example of this.”

Craig Jones, Head of Business Development for Proven Energy said, “We welcome the opportunity to work with all customers and partners to ensure proper siting of our wind turbines. The need to combat climate change is such that it is our duty to ensure that people get the most out of renewable technologies. This installation reaffirms Proven’s capability to work in partnership, collaboration and harmony with local communities and wildlife.”

Alex Murley, Small Systems Manager for the British Wind Energy Association said “Proven Energy form part of a growing UK small scale wind industry which leads the world in low carbon product design. It is gratifying to see the RSPB join the ranks of organisations recognising that in the windiest country in Europe, there are thousands of households and businesses able to generate their own clean, green energy from correctly sited wind energy technologies”.

James Hoare, Managing Director from Ardenham Energy installed the wind turbine. “We were delighted to have been awarded this high profile and important installation project by the RSPB, which confirms the support by the RSPB for responsibly located wind turbines as a method of clean electricity production that will help combat climate change”.

The Proven Energy 15kW wind turbine, together with existing solar technology, should provide enough energy to power the visitor centre, minimising the site’s carbon footprint. The wind turbine is sited on a 5 m/s site and has the potential to produce 21,000kWh per year reducing the RSPB’s CO2 emissions by 9,000kg per annum.

The RSPB speaks out for birds and wildlife, tackling the problems that threaten the environment. The RSPB sees climate change as the biggest threat to global wildlife in the 21st century. The impact of global warming threatens many species with extinction and there is a need for renewable energy to tackle greenhouse gas emissions.

A New Wave in Hydropower will Provide a Renewable Energy Advantage for California

A New Wave in Hydropower will Provide a Renewable Energy Advantage for California

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 14, 2006

While Royal Dutch, Exxon and BP search for energy in exotic places like the Sudan, Peru, Syria, Indonesia, Gabon, Tunisia and Ecuador; Bourne Energy, a California based energy company, is looking only a few miles off the coast of California for large energy fields. And they don’t need drilling rigs, pipelines, tanker fleets, refineries or generator plants to harness the power.

The 3,000-mile coastline from California to Alaska contains enormous amounts of wave and tidal power which are almost entirely undeveloped. California’s ocean energy densities alone range up to 65 kW/frontal foot of wave energy. Waves — their power is unfathomable: trillions of cubic feet of water traveling at three feet per second, unhindered for days across thousands of miles of open sea before crashing to shore. Because wave energy is highly concentrated wind energy, and because water density is much higher than that of air, the available energy from ocean waves is known to be many times greater than that of wind. Along the California coast, yearly averages show wave power as having a 17 times advantage in available energy per square meter. The result is a perfect energy source — silent, hidden, clean, locally controlled and cost competitive.

Bourne Energy, a Los Angeles based renewable energy company, has developed OceanStar, TidalStar and RiverStar hydropower systems to open up these vast untapped renewable resources. The company’s hydropower systems have no need for dams or reservoirs and come with no emissions, noise or visual impact. Power from ocean, tidal and river sources can be produced near the state’s largest energy consuming regions. And unlike large dam projects, Bourne’s river power system does not need large structures or reservoirs which have major social and ecological impacts and lose power over time due to sedimentation.

OceanStar is a submerged ocean power harvester that interconnects to form mile-long underwater energy capture arrays situated a few miles offshore. TidalStar is a submerged tidal power harvester which interconnects to form long tidal fence arrays. RiverStar is an in-river, dam-free river power harvester. Each of these hydropower systems utilizes modular components making them highly adaptable to specific sites. All three have a number of novel technologies incorporated into the energy absorber, energy transmission, control and mooring systems. Bourne’s OceanStar, TidalStar and RiverStar series are capable of producing electricity, clean water and hydrogen while the OceanStar also mediates the risks to coastlines and breakwaters from the ravages of storms as well as serves as a security barrier.

Over the next 24 months Bourne plans to build full-scale prototypes of each technology which will be used as demonstrators. Bourne plans to promote the establishment of utility scale ocean, tidal and river power systems globally by setting up subsidiaries in Asia, Europe and South America to mass-produce the units. Bourne plans to partner with major manufacturers to fabricate key parts; and hydropower service companies to install the systems.

California is destined to lead the world toward energy self-reliance due to its enormous renewable energy assets. In an energy hungry world where every drop of crude that can be pumped out of the ground is being sought out and extracted, California will be able to increase its energy use without importing more oil. As worldwide energy demand keeps rising, the cost of crude oil extraction increases and energy security problems continue, and California will gain an ever-widening advantage for its economy, the health of its citizens and overall regional security.

About Bourne Energy:

Bourne Energy, established this year, is a Los Angeles based renewable energy research and development company. Its goal is to re-energize the world with better alternatives to crude oil — no oil spills, no oil shortages, no smog, no global warming, no nukes and no energy blackouts; and still retain high energy comforts while extending them to billions of people in the world currently without power. Management’s combined experience includes experts in marine, advanced materials, electronic components, defense and automotive product development, advanced manufacturing systems and industrial design.

Vermont Launches Renewable Energy Atlas

Montpelier, VT (PRWEB) April 21, 2010

The Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund (VSJF), in conjunction with the Vermont Center for Geographic Information and Fountains Spatial, Inc., announced the launch of The Renewable Energy Atlas of Vermont, a state-of-the-art GIS-based web application that identifies, analyzes, and visualizes existing and promising locations for renewable energy projects.

The Atlas is the first tool of its kind in the United States to enable users to choose their town or county and then select from a suite of renewable energy options including biomass, efficiency, geothermal, hydroelectric, solar and wind. With a click of the mouse, users can map their selection. Existing and potential renewable energy sites, renewable energy installers and consultants will appear on the map, and an analysis panel will summarize the results. The simple to use web application can be accessed anywhere and users can save their maps and analyses as unique URLs or export them to a PDF document.

“The Atlas will assist town energy committees, the Clean Energy Development Fund and other funders, educators, planners, policy-makers and businesses in making informed decisions about the planning and implementation of renewable energy in their communities,” said Ellen Kahler, executive director of the VSJF. “Especially with the forthcoming decommissioning of Vermont Yankee, we believe the Atlas will contribute to identifying how much and where efficiency and renewable energy projects can be sited in Vermont.”

U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy secured U.S. Department of Energy funding for the Atlas project.

“Vermont has always stood for best practices in commercial and residential development to preserve the environment,” Leahy said. “The Renewable Energy Atlas of Vermont will be an important tool in helping us all to consider the responsible energy options when thinking about our renewable energy future. Successful projects mean greater energy security, a cleaner and healthier environment, and a better quality of life across our state.”

According to Atlas project director Scott Sawyer, “with the proliferation of energy committees in over 90 towns and cities, it’s clear that Vermonters want a renewable energy and efficiency based economy. We designed the Atlas with these town energy committees and many other potential users in mind.” Sawyer went on to say that, “We believe it’s important to make renewable energy data accessible to everyone, so that businesses, utilities, state agencies and organizations charged with building the state’s future can make informed renewable energy project decisions.”

Project developers also said that additional updates will be made to the Atlas over the coming year, including updates to the woody biomass and wind data layers. The Atlas joins Vermont’s growing renewable energy development toolkit, including the Clean Energy Development Fund, the state’s new feed-in tariff program, “clean energy assessment districts,” and Vermont’s 25 by ’25 Initiative.

Major funding for this project was received from the U.S. Department of Energy through U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, the Vermont Clean Energy Development Fund and the Vermont Community Foundation. The Atlas was developed by the VSJF, in collaboration with the Vermont Center for Geographic Information, Fountains Spatial and Overit Media.

About the VSJF:

The Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund was created by the Vermont Legislature in 1995 to accelerate the development of Vermont’s green economy through early stage grant funding and technical assistance to entrepreneurs, businesses, farmers, networks and others interested in developing jobs and markets in the green economy.

The VSJF typically focuses on two or three of the market sectors identified by the legislature at any one time. Our current focus is on increasing the local production and local use of biofuels, and sustainable forest products and in strengthening Vermont’s food system.

The products and services we support drive the green economy by:

Striving to dramatically reduce the use of fossil fuels,
Relocalizing production (including food production, manufacturing, and the sustainable use of local resources), and
Building economic and community resilience against challenges such as peak oil and climate change.

Killington Resort to Offset 100 Percent of Power Usage Through Renewable Energy Credits

killington_sized.jpg

Killington, VT (Vocus) April 8, 2008

Killington Resort , the largest ski and snowboard resort in the Northeast, continues to expand upon its on-going environmental initiatives by announcing today it will offset 100 percent of its electric use through renewable energy sources beginning in June 2008.

Killington Resort will purchase 26,199,909 kWh of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) annually, which will eliminate more than 17,800 tons of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere – an amount equivalent to emissions produced by the annual electricity consumption of approximately 2,079 average homes. Combined with Killington’s ongoing environmental initiatives, including Freeaire installation on the resort’s walk-in coolers, Compact Florescent Bulb (CFLs) replacement, and expanded use of Low Energy snow guns, the purchase of RECs marks the resort’s continued commitment to becoming an industry leader in environmental stewardship.

”Killington always had an ongoing environmental program, including waste water conservation, snowmaking efficiency and support of regional transportation,” said Chris Nyberg, Killington’s president and general manager. “However, since the resort was purchased by Powdr Corp and SP Land last year, we have been able to initiate many new programs that acknowledge climate change and our belief that we can become a more sustainable business. Our recent initiatives, including resort-wide co-mingled recycling, Freeaire technology, and now purchasing of Renewable Energy Credits will further reduce our overall carbon footprint.”

All told, Killington’s parent company Powdr Corp has committed to purchasing a total of 49,306,224 kWh of Renewable Energy Credits at all seven of its resorts for the coming year.

“The annual energy consumption of a ski resort is substantial, and we have a responsibility to reduce the carbon footprint of our resorts to help preserve their pristine settings for generations to come,” said Brent Giles, director of environmental affairs for Killington’s parent company, Powdr Corp. “While this switch to renewable energy will be invisible to the guest, skiers and riders can enjoy peace of mind knowing that all of Killington’s electricity is now coming from 100 percent renewable sources.”

Powdr Corp will work with Boulder, Colorado-based Renewable Choice Energy as its renewable energy provider. Renewable Choice is an award-winning renewable energy and carbon offset provider of Green-e certified sources such as wind, biomass and small hydro. The EPA estimates that Powdr Corp’s purchase will avoid over 85 million pounds of C02 emissions annually, which is equal to removing 8,539 passenger vehicles from the road or powering 6,175 average American homes for a year. Killington’s commitment of RECs is the largest of any resort in the East.

Last summer, Killington Resort invested $ 50,000 into retrofitting six of the resort’s walk-in coolers with a Freeaire Refrigeration System , which taps into the greatest source of refrigeration ever created: winter. The Freeaire system uses cold outside air and new high efficiency evaporator fan motors to chill walk-in coolers. Since the installation and through April 1, 2008 the Freeaire program has saved 55,200 kWh of electricity and eliminated more than 3.7 tons of CO2 emissions.

Killington also initiated a resort-wide co-mingled recycling program this season, which is forecasted to eliminate 113 tons of solid waste annually. In addition, more than 600 CFLs have been installed around the resort.

In addition, Killington improved snowmaking operations and lowered its overall carbon footprint for the 2007-08 season with a 10-percent increase in its Low Energy snow gun arsenal. Additional electric outlets were also installed on-mountain for increased use of energy-efficient fan guns throughout base and high-traffic areas. The increased use of Low Energy snow guns has reduced Killington’s diesel consumption by more than 30 percent and electricity by 25 percent over the past three years.

“We’re taking measures in our everyday business practices to reduce our carbon footprint,” said Nyberg. “All of these projects align with our mission statement which is to exceed customer expectations, be innovative, profitable and environmentally responsible.”

More information on Killington’s ongoing environmental initiatives is available here.
