The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts is making the switch to green energy, sourcing approximately 80% of its electricity through the use of a five acre solar farm located in Leicester, Massachusetts. Now operating in its fifth year and most spectacular season yet, The Hanover Theatre is proud to be leading the way as one of the largest performing arts centers in the country to source the majority of its electricity from solar power.

“The vision of the theatre is to be the finest performing arts center in New England,” said Ted Hudson, facilities manager at The Hanover Theatre. “The performing arts may not normally be associated with renewable energy, but by being a leader in the community the theatre hopes to set an example for other organizations, not just in Worcester but regionally and nationally, as well. Performers in the entertainment world are also becoming quite conscious of their carbon footprint. Combine that with the amount saved each year in energy costs, and it’s mutually beneficial for everyone.”

The Hanover Theatre’s roof could not support a solar system of adequate size, so with the assistance of Prince Lobel Tye LLP of Boston, the theatre is now part of a net metering credit system through National Grid. The theatre will purchase solar credits at a significant discount, utilizing the power generated from the Hanover Off Site Solar Power LLC farm in Leicester.

The Hanover Theatre kicks off its season with THE HANOVER THEATRE GOES SOLAR on September 12 at 5:30pm, as part of the Access Hanover Lyceum Series. Attendees will enjoy a panel discussion from leading experts in the renewable energy sector, including panelists Dr. David Angel (moderator), Clark University’s president; a representative from the renewable energy group at the law firm of Prince Lobel Tye LLP; John O’Dell, Worcester Energy’s president; Vincent DeVito, IES executive director; and Debra Cary, Mass Audubon Broad Meadow Brook’s executive director. The discussion will focus on the case study of The Hanover Theatre’s solar project, why it’s important and how a renewable energy strategy can be implemented by other organizations. Attendees will learn more about what is currently taking place in the area of green energy, who are the businesses and individuals making a difference using alternative energy sources, and what resources area available to anyone interested in transitioning to renewable energy. The discussion will conclude with a reception, giving attendees the opportunity to network with speakers of the panel.

Vincent DeVito, executive director of the Institute for Energy and Sustainability, is enthusiastic about the theatre’s solar initiative and their partnership with the theatre for the event. “The Institute for Energy & Sustainability is proud to co-host and support the theatre as they celebrate their purchase of 1MW of solar energy at their Lyceum event.
