National Development Council Celebrates Opening of Utah’s Largest Solar Energy Project Opening Coincides with Non-Profit’s Nomination for 2012 CDFA Excellence in Energy

National Development Council (NDC) http://www.NationalDevelopmentCouncil.org., the nation’s oldest non-profit community development organization, announced today that its Housing and Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) New Markets, Inc. will celebrate the opening of Salt Lake City’s Salt Palace Convention Center, the largest solar energy project in Utah. In addition to today’s opening ceremonies, NDC is also celebrating the organization’s nomination for a 2012 CDFA Excellence in Energy Finance Award for its financing work on the project.
“We are incredibly proud to join the people of Utah in celebrating today’s opening, and to be recognized for our work on the Salt Palace Convention Center, which hosts the largest solar installation in the state of Utah,” said Robert W. Davenport, President, National Development Council. “It’s our mission to lessen the burdens of government while building institutions. Our collaborations with Salt Lake County and other public and private institutions in Utah have resulted in creation of major public education in renewable energy.”
The Salt Palace Convention Center’s solar installation is one of the largest rooftop solar installations in the United States. The 1.65-megawatt photovoltaic rooftop solar array measures the size of five football fields, and is expected to provide the convention center with up to 17 percent of its energy from the sun. Present value savings to the county over the estimated 25-year useful life of the system is expected to be $ 2.5 million. In addition, an estimated 86 million pounds of CO2 will be avoided, and more than 26 million gallons of water used in association with coal-fired electricity will be saved.
A public event celebrating the opening will take place on Thursday, May 24 at 10AM in the South Plaza of the Salt Palace Convention Center, located at 200 South West Temple, and will feature speakers including Mayor Peter Corroon, Bella Energy’s Andrew McKenna and NDC’s Chuck Depew.
NDC has brought more than $ 1.2 billion in investments to 67 projects in 24 states in its storied history. The projects have included manufacturing businesses, research and development facilities, and retail and commercial developments in underserved neighborhoods, as well as community facilities that provide health, social and educational services to low-income individuals and families.

Blue Energy Canada Inc, a leading green energy technology company, attended B.C.’s Climate Action and Clean Energy Reception to celebrate with British Columbia’s Premier Gordon Campbell where he officially designated the day as Clean Energy Day at Robson Square during the 2010 Winter Games by announcing three new major clean energy and technology investments in the province. Blair Lekstrom, Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources is quoted as saying that they need to address both B.C.’s growing energy needs and climate change, which will require increased development of clean, renewable energy. Arne Elias Arne is recognized as an expert in energy and transportation sustainability. He is the past Executive Director of the Centre for Sustainable Transportation at the University of Winnipeg and has worked in most transportation sectors including coastal maritime, highways and bridges, freight, rail and cycling. He advises governments, NGOs and the private sector, and has produced research on energy and transportation sustainability issues. Arne holds an MBA is a PhD candidate that has taught at the University of British Columbia. His academic work over the last decade envisions sustainable transportation in a key enabling role with the electricity grid to realistically develop an integrated and sustainable energy system. Arne appreciates that there is a new awareness in governments, industry and the public and will be working with Blue Energy to further communicate that the Blue Energy tidal bridge delivers the best value in tidal resource development.
The company has recently moved its headquarters from Vancouver to a new location in Richmond, BC, a city that is currently sharing the hosting of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, just south of Vancouver. The move will provide the company with room for expansion as international organizations, investors and governments express growing interest in the tidal turbine project.
